Description

Smeatons Tower – Plymouth – Eddystone Rocks. The third lighthouse to be built on Eddystone rocks in 1759. Dismantled in 1877 when erosion to the rocks under the lighthouse caused it to shake from side to side whenever large waves hit. The foundations and stub of the tower remain, close to the new and more solid foundations of the current lighthouse Douglass Tower, the foundations of Smeatons Tower proved too strong to be dismantled so the Victorians left them where they stood.

Plymouth Breakwater is a 1,560-metre stone breakwater protecting Plymouth Sound and the anchorages near Plymouth, Devon, England. It is 13 metres wide at the top and the base is 65 metres. It lies in about 10 metres of water. Around 4 million tons of rock were used in its construction in 1812 at the then-colossal cost of £1.5 million (equivalent to £91.7 million today). Plymouth is a city situated on the south coast of Devon, England, approximately 37 miles south-west of Exeter and 190 miles west-south-west of London. Enclosing the city are the mouths of the river Plym and river Tamar, which are naturally incorporated into Plymouth Sound to form a boundary with Cornwall
