Wastwater is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park. The lake is almost 3 miles long and more than one-third mile wide. It is a glacial lake, formed in a what is a fine example of a glacially ‘over-deepened’ valley. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet. The surface of the lake is about 200 feet above sea level, while its bottom is over 50 feet below sea level. Wastwater is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the lakes. Surrounded by mountains, Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain.
